While kicking a ball through the dusty streets of his Brazilian hometown, young Edson Arantes do Nascimento was given the nickname Pelé so casually that no one remembers its meaning. Today, the name is famous worldwide as belonging to history's greatest soccer player. Here, in Pelé's own words, is his incredible life story: his five goals in the last two games of the 1958 World Cup at the tender age of 17, his glory years with his Brazilian club FC Santos, his role in four World Cup tournaments, his comeback as a member of the storied New York Cosmos, and his lifelong role as goodwill ambassador for the world's favorite sport.

Beautiful Team: In Search of Pele and the 1970 Brazilians
Garry Jenkins (Author)

60 Used! | New! from $0.01 (as of 02/22/2013 16:47 PST)

Pele

Brazil won the 1970 World Cup with an exhibition of the most fluid, exhilarating football ever witnessed. Their young prodigy Jairzhino scored in every match. Tostao, Rivelino, Clodoaldo and Gerson emerged as masters of what became known as "samba football" -- slow, elegant moves punctuated by cobra-sharp strikes that often led to breathtaking goals. In a team of jewels, however, Pele, the Black Pearl, stood supreme. Brazil's 4-1 demolition of a cynical Italy in the Final remains the most joyous climax the tournament has ever witnessed. For many, the 1970 Brazilians epitomised all that is beautiful about the beautiful game, and they are revered not just in their home country but around the world. In THE BEAUTIFUL TEAM Garry Jenkins journeys to Brazil to track down the surviving members of that unforgettable eleven and talk to them about their memories of the World Cup. From the chaotic cabinet room of Pele's Sports Ministry in Brasilia to the home of the reclusive Tostao; from Carlos Alberto's soccer school in Rio to the Sao Paulo garage where Felix is still defending his calamitous contribution to the 1970 campaign, this is a travelogue into footballing legend. As colourful as Brazilian culture itself, THE BEAUTIFUL TEAM is a fascinating -- and often touching -- collection of personal histories and a celebration of the most revered team the world has ever known.

Description #3 by Bonanza - mykicks booth:

CD "BOYS FOR PELE" by TORI AMOS BOYS FOR PELE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.Spirituality is tangled inexorably with power and patriarchy for Tori Amos. On Amos' third solo record, the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele serves as her alter-ego, presenting a threat to Amos' ever-present, menacing father figures. On "Muhammad My Friend," she warns, "I know you've seen fire/But you've never seen fire/Until you've seen Pele blow." Amos is equally intrigued by other strong, angry females--on "Twinkle," she admires "a girl twice as hard" who reportedly killed a man.In contrast to her words, Amos tends toward restrained, ethereal vocals; they occasionally verge on ferocity but never quite make it all the way. Her piano and harpsichord playing is, by turns, delicate and passionate. Contrasts like those between confessional and enigmatic lyrics, and between an underlying sense of anger and a voice that holds back from truly expressing it, create an electric tension throughout BOYS FOR PELE.PELE is the first record Amos has self-produced, and it branches out from her previous work, exploring more loosely structured songwriting and experimenting with the use of strings, brass and a gospel choir. Pele

As part of the acclaimed Sports Virtues series, "Pele: Devotion" discusses the struggles and triumphs of Pele’s life. As with each story in the Sports Virtues series, this book assigns a virtue to a celebrated athlete or coach, and uses that person's story to help the reader achieve that virtue for him or herself.

What emerges after reading these stories is not only a greater understanding and appreciation of the virtues that these icons needed to get through life, but also an inspiration for the reader. Each story is followed by a small quotation from literature to amplify the meaning and application of the virtue, and each story is also followed by a series of study/review questions and other interactive activities to help the reader further understand the virtue and how to achieve it.
